Adler unveils Energy plan

(Mt. Laurel, NJ) – John Adler, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress in New Jersey’s 3rd District, unveiled his plan today to break our nation’s grip on foreign oil.

“Over the past seven years the Bush administration and the Republicans in Congress have failed to put the United States on a track to make us energy independent. Their negligence has jeopardized our nation's long-term economic stability and has put our national security at risk,” said Adler.

“With gas hovering around $4 dollars a gallon, middle class families continue to feel the squeeze financially, and no family should have to choose between filling up their gas tank, and going to the pharmacy to fill their prescriptions. It’s not right, and that is not what America should be about.”

Senator Adler went on to comment about yesterday’s news that billions of dollars of Iraqi surplus are not being used to fund reconstruction efforts, and that the bulk of reconstruction money is being funded solely by the United States. He said, “Yesterday’s news regarding Iraqi reconstruction efforts is disturbing. How long are we going to continue to build bridges and schools in Baghdad when we can’t afford to invest in energy independence here at home? As a member of Congress, I will call for the redirection of non-military aid back to America so that we can fund energy tax credits for wind and solar, and promote research and development of new energy technologies. This is the kind of fresh approach and innovative ideas we need in Washington.”

Adler campaign manager Mark Warren added, "We need leaders in Washington who will bring common sense solutions and fresh ideas to solve our nation's pertinent problems. While Chris Myers is out advocating for tax breaks for big oil companies who continue to report record profits, John Adler is advocating on behalf of middle class families who can't afford $4 a gallon gas. He is leading the charge for making real investments in renewable energy such as wind and solar that will create thousands of new jobs and bring real solutions to our nation's problems."

John Adler has a plan that will put our nation on track to energy independence:

Short-Term solutions

  • Prosecuting oil companies that practice price gouging.
  • Temporarily halting shipments to the Strategic Petroleum reserve.
  • Enforcing the Gas Price Relief for Consumers Act that authorizes the Justice Department to investigate price gouging and take legal action against OPEC state-controlled entities that collude to limit the supply or fix the price of oil.
  • Eliminating billions of dollars in tax subsidies to big oil companies.
  • Closing the so-called "Enron Loophole" that allows unregulated speculation and price manipulation in the commodities market by big-oil interests, driving up the price of oil and natural gas at the expense of the consumer.

Long-Term solutions

  • Invest in wind, solar, bio-diesel, geothermal, and other sources of renewable energy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and fossil fuels.
  • Establish the renewable electricity standard at 25 percent for renewable energy sources such as wind and solar by 2025.
  • Provide tax incentives for energy-efficient buildings and appliances.
  • Provide incentives to people who use clean, alternative energy and companies that produce it.
  • Set new mileage standards for all cars at 40 miles per gallon
  • Mandate carbon-neutral federal offices. Half of the energy used by the federal government goes toward powering over 500,000 federal buildings around the country, at a cost to taxpayers of more than $5 billion.

Adler Slams Myers for Supporting Tax Breaks for Big Oil

(Mt. Laurel, NJ) – In today's Philadelphia Inquirer Republican congressional candidate Chris Myers is quoted as saying he supports further tax breaks for big oil companies, a notion that John Adler, the Democratic nominee for Congress in New Jersey's 3rd District, finds appalling at a time when middle class families are struggling to afford nearly $4 per gallon. Adler issued the following statement:

"I am stunned by the lack of sympathy that Mayor Myers has towards the people of South Jersey – people who struggle everyday to fill up their tank just so they can get to work.

As a friendly reminder to Mayor Myers, just last week Exxon-Mobil posted record profits of over $11 billion for the quarter, which is nearly $1,500 a second. Meanwhile, gas prices continue to hover around $4 dollars a gallon and this has had a ripple effect on our economy. Airlines are gouging passengers through increased fees and fewer services. Home foreclosures are at an all time high. Even pet adoptions are on the decline because people can't even afford to feed themselves. Just last week, 58% of New Jerseyans said they have cut back on vacation and weekend driving.

And despite all of this, for whatever reason, Mayor Myers says that big oil should continue to get tax breaks at our expense, and he continues to defend some of the biggest, wealthiest special interests.

The contrast couldn't be clearer; my concern is for middle class families, the same ones that Mayor Myers and the Washington special interests have forgotten about. This is the same Chris Myers who said that "the economy is basically strong." Mr. Mayor, with all due respect, when are you going to wake up and realize what's going on all around you?

I believe we need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil by putting a stop to tax breaks for big oil companies, and investing the money in alternative energy sources."

John Adler has released a comprehensive plan to fight our nation's addiction to foreign oil, and invest in a national strategy for pursuing energy independence and renewable sources energy. The Adler plan is as follows:

(Mt. Laurel, NJ) – The Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey endorsed Democratic nominee John Adler today in the open seat race for New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District. The firefighters continue the growing list of groups such as the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police, the Recreational Fishing Alliance, and the Sierra Club that endorsed Jim Saxton in 2006, but are now supporting Democrat John Adler. Senator Adler was joined by Congressman Joe Crowley of New York, whose cousin, a New York City Fire Department Battalion Chief, was killed in the attacks on September 11th, 2001.

Dominick Marino, the President of the Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey said, "The firefighters in New Jersey have a true advocate in John Adler. He has been a tireless activist for our brave men and women in uniform in the State Senate, and in Congress he will continue that same record on our behalf."

"I am honored that the firefighters of New Jersey have decided to support my candidacy and stand with me in my campaign to bring common sense solutions and real change to Washington," said Adler. "Every day the brave men and women who comprise the Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey risk their lives to keep us out of harms way. In Congress, I will fight to make sure that all firefighters have access to affordable health care and the prescription drug coverage that they so rightly deserve."

Congressman Crowley added, "John Adler has demonstrated throughout his career a real commitment to working men and women, and to first responders. I look forward to John joining me in Congress, where together we will continue this important fight on behalf of firefighters and first responders."

Since 1929, the Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey has grown to in excess of sixty (60) local unions of every size and complexity representing in excess of 3,500 of New Jersey's approximately 6,000 professional firefighters.

Adler Condemns Bush for Vetoing Medicare Bill

Says Republicans in Washington are out of touch with middle class families and seniors

For Immediate Release: July 15th, 2008 - Contact: Raiyan Syed (856.222.9707)

(Mt. Laurel, NJ) - John Adler, the Democratic nominee for Congress in New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District, today blasted President Bush for vetoing the Medicare Improvement for Patients and Providers Act of 2008. "President Bush's ill-advised veto is proof that he is out of touch with middle class Americans and seniors who depend on Medicare for health care coverage," said Adler.

"Republicans in Washington have demonstrated time and again that they don't understand the squeeze that families are feeling due to skyrocketing gas, food, and health care costs.

"First Republicans in Congress denied children health care coverage by vetoing SCHIP and then they stood with big oil over the interests of our middle class. And now President Bush has the audacity to veto a bill that will encourage more doctors to participate in Medicare and preserve choices for millions of seniors and disabled Americans," said Adler. "Instead of siding with seniors, the Bush administration chose to put profits of the insurance industry over the health needs of our seniors."

Adler said that if he is elected to Congress, he will fight to protect the senior citizens of the district from cuts to Medicare and fix the broken system in Washington. "We owe it to young adults and seniors alike, to make sure that Medicare is fully paid for, and that retired Americans get the health care they need."

Adler applauded Democrats and Republicans in Congress who broke with the White House to side with the best interests of middle class Americans everywhere and encouraged them to override the President's veto.

Adler to Bush: Not Off Our Shores

Says offshore drilling would damage lifeblood of state's economy; Calls on oil companies to use 68 million acres of untapped land and invest in renewable sources of energy

For Immediate Release: July 14th, 2008
Contact: Raiyan Syed (856.222.9707)

(Mt. Laurel, NJ) – John Adler, the Democratic nominee for Congress in New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District, said today that President Bush's reported decision to lift the executive ban on offshore drilling in the United States would jeopardize New Jersey's economy without significantly increasing the nation's oil supplies.

"Lifting the moratorium on offshore drilling will have catastrophic consequences on our state's tourism industry, jeopardize the livelihood of anglers and cause great harm to the Jersey Shore. President Bush has already damaged both our economy and our environment. Instead of calling for offshore drilling, the Bush administration should first demand that oil companies explore the 68 million acres of land currently leased for oil and gas development in the continental United States that has been untouched thus far, or force them to 'lose it'," said Adler. "I support domestic oil production. We can accomplish that without drilling off New Jersey's shore. We should drill the 68 million acres that have yet to be explored. Let's increase our domestic oil production and protect the Jersey Shore at the same time."

Adler said the federal government needs to stop providing billions of dollars in tax subsidies to big oil companies and supports efforts underway to give middle class families relief at the pump by:

* Prosecuting oil companies that practice price gouging
* Enforcing the Gas Price Relief for Consumers Act that gives the Justice Department ability to investigate price gouging, and authority to take legal action against OPEC state-controlled entities that collude to limit the supply, or fix the price of oil
* Eliminating $17 billion a year in tax subsidies to big oil companies
* Investing in wind, solar, bio-diesel, geothermal, and other sources of renewable energy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and fossil fuels.
* Establishing a renewable electricity standard—25 percent renewable sources such as wind and solar by 2025
* Providing tax incentives for energy efficient buildings and appliances.
* Providing incentives to people who use clean, alternative energy and companies that produce it.
* Imposing new mileage standards for all cars—40 miles per gallon
* Requiring carbon-neutral federal offices: Half of the energy used by the federal government goes towards powering over 500,000 federal buildings around the country. The cost to taxpayers is over $5 billion dollars.
