Eastampton, NJ – Today the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of State Senator John Adler for Congress in New Jersey's Third District. "There is no stronger advocate for the environment in the New Jersey legislature than John Adler," said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club. "Not only has he been a leader and a champion of environmental causes, he also knows how to get things done. We believe that he will be a great asset in Washington and will take his proven legislative experience and environmental leadership to the Congress of the United States."

Adler said he was honored to receive the group's early endorsement and that he will work on a bipartisan level to make sure Washington tackles the challenges of global warming and energy independence. "I will work with community leaders and citizens here in south Jersey and fight for real change in Washington that will force our government to deal with the realities of global warming and climate change. We must work together to decrease our dependence on foreign oil, invest in renewable sources of energy, and make a real and concerted effort to deal with the crisis of global warming that the Bush Administration has long neglected," said Adler.

As one of the most dedicated environmentalists on the Senate Environment Committee, Senator Adler has played a major role in making every piece of environmental legislation to pass the New Jersey State Senate during his tenure on the committee a reality. In addition, he has sponsored landmark legislation dealing with energy, global warming, open space, clean air, and clean water.

Senator Adler was one of the co-sponsors of the landmark Global Warming Response Act, considered the strongest global warming law in the nation. He also helped promote the use of renewable energy, especially solar, and more efficient use of energy technology. During the fight for New Jersey's Clean Car Bill, Senator Adler, a prime sponsor, stood up to special interests and the smog lobby to see that the bill passed.

Senator Adler's work on clean energy legislation in New Jersey has not only helped to combat global warming and protect our environment, it has also saved consumers money and created new, "green-collar" jobs in the state. "John Adler understands that green equals green – that you can protect the environment and promote our economy at the same time," said Tittel.

"At a time when families are struggling to pay the cost of gas at the pump, it's important for us to invest in renewable sources of energy to wean our country off its dependence on foreign oil,” said Adler. "We must invest in green technology to build a clean alternative energy economy that will create jobs and enable us to compete with China and India in the global economy.”

In addition to his important energy work, Senator Adler has also fought to clean up the air we breathe. He helped shepherd through New Jersey's indoor smoking ban, which was an important victory for public health, and was instrumental in seeing legislation on retrofitting diesel school buses passed, protecting our children's health at no cost to the taxpayers.

The senator has been involved in ongoing efforts to secure a stable source of funding for the Garden State Preservation Trust – which funds New Jersey's open space, farmland, and historic preservation programs – and is a strong ally on ocean issues, including opposing the misguided but continuing efforts of Big Oil to drill off the Jersey Shore. He has supported campaign finance reform and other measures to ensure not just a clean environment, but a clean government.

In the past, the Sierra Club has routinely endorsed retiring Congressman Jim Saxton and has considered him an environmental champion. The Club believes that John Adler is the best candidate to continue and improve upon Jim Saxton’s record.

"Rarely has the Sierra Club been presented with the opportunity to endorse a Congressional candidate with proven environmental leadership comparable to Senator Adler’s,” concluded Greg Auriemma, Chair of the Sierra Club’s Ocean County Group. “It’s an opportunity we could not ignore. We fully embrace his candidacy and ask voters in the Third Congressional District to do likewise.”

The Sierra Club is the nation's oldest and largest environmental group with more than 750,000 members, about 23,000 of them here in New Jersey. As Tittel describes it, "The Sierra Club endorsement is the green version of the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval." The group is committed to helping John Adler win election to Congress by contributing volunteers to the campaign, going door-to-door, making phone calls, helping with fundraising, and in other ways.

Statement of Sen. John Adler on the Toll Hike Plan

(Cherry Hill, NJ) - State Senator and Democratic candidate for Congress, John Adler (D-Cherry Hill) issued the following statement:

"Increasing highway tolls would inflict yet another financial hardship on our hard-working taxpayers, and I oppose it. We should not even consider asking for one more penny from those taxpayers until Trenton assumes its share of sacrifice and makes serious cuts in government spending.

"It's time to run state government the way we run a household - by not spending money we don't already have. Our middle-class home owners cannot afford another burden on their family budgets. They are already being squeezed, so much so that people are leaving our state in droves and relocating in lower-cost states such as Delaware and the Carolinas. We must do everything in our power to stop that exodus - and that means taking the steps necessary to slash spending in state government.

"The governor issued a challenge to the legislature and to the people of New Jersey to come up with our own plan to alleviate the state's financial crisis - and that's what I intend to do. I agree with the governor's proposal to freeze state spending. But I believe we need to go further and cut spending in state government. I also strongly believe that Trenton should make those hard sacrifices before even thinking about hitting up our taxpayers with new financial burdens such as increasing the cost of driving our highways.

"The people of New Jersey are demanding answers, not more of the same partisan rancor and finger-pointing that has prevented meaningful spending reforms. Trenton can no longer be allowed to pass the buck to taxpayers - asking them to pay more because of the state government's refusal or inability to solve its own financial mess. Everywhere I go, I hear the pleas of taxpayers who are feeling the squeeze of big government, and I will do everything in my power to defend their interests."

(Cherry Hill, NJ) – State Senator and Democratic candidate for Congress, John Adler, released the following statement in response to President Bush's final State of the Union address tonight.

"As I sat at home with my family this evening and watched President Bush deliver his final State of the Union address, I was disappointed to hear a President so out of touch with our country's need for change. Our economy is weakening, we are at war without a plan to win the peace, and our President refuses to listen to the will of the people. I am optimistic that we can change the direction of our country, and I am committed to fighting for this change. We can bring a swift and honorable end to the war in Iraq, and we can revive our economy through fiscal responsibility and a long term economic agenda that benefits all Americans.

"We are a strong people, and our country will rebound from eight years of failed leadership from the Bush administration. But we need new leaders who truly understand the needs of hardworking families here in South Jersey and across America."

Democratic Congressional Candidate John Adler and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer Highlight the Need for Economic Relief for M

(Marlton, NJ) – State Senator John Adler, the Democratic candidate for Congress in New Jersey's Third District, and U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) joined Denise Warga at her home in Marlton today to discuss the urgency for real solutions to a weakening economy. Warga discussed the challenges she is facing – trying to do more with less money. Hoyer and Adler discussed their plans to help middle class families immediately and the need for a long term solution.

Warga, a single mother of two, said she has experienced steady increases in her health care premiums and steep rises in her heating and gas bills. Like most middle class families in South Jersey and across the nation, she is struggling to make ends meet. "It's getting harder and harder for families to live the American dream," said Warga.

"Between paying a mortgage, heating bills, and health care, it's impossible to save. I have already tapped into my retirement funds, and I may have to take more money out of my 401(K). If the economy gets any worse, I'm afraid what might happen next," continued Warga.

Adler said the economic problems facing middle-class families will be his top priority if elected to Congress. "We need to change how business is being done in Washington. Faced with unconscionably high property taxes, gas prices, and health care costs, working families of New Jersey are struggling to keep their heads above water.

"We need real answers for South Jersey families struggling to make ends meet. We must create tax breaks for middle class families instead of the wealthiest 1%. And we must bring an end to the war in Iraq that has cost us thousands of lives and nearly $600 billion, so that we can provide health care to middle class families, invest in renewable sources of energy, rebuild our infrastructure. America must be our top priority - not Baghdad," said Adler.

"When I go to Washington, I will work with Democrats and Republicans to bring about these necessary changes, and I will always fight for families like Denise Warga's, who are hardworking citizens who deserve a break."

"We need more Democrats in Congress like John Adler to fight for real change – to boost our economy, bring a responsible end to the war in Iraq and offer affordable healthcare for millions of American children. John Adler has a clear vision to change the direction of the country and fight for hardworking families in South Jersey, I am proud to support his candidacy for Congress," Hoyer said.

(Mount Laurel, NJ) - Considered one of the Democratic Party's top candidates to seize a Republican Congressional seat in 2008, John Adler for Congress (NJ-03) announced today that the campaign raised over $610,000 total, and has nearly $580,000 cash on hand.

Heading into 2008, Adler is running with the support of the Democratic leaders from all three 3rd District counties, and continues to amass substantial grassroots and financial backing as the campaign gets under way. The campaign has already signed up dozens of volunteers ready to make phone calls and canvass door-to-door with a message for change.

"For months, I have been listening to the concerns of voters across the district, and their message is clear," Adler said. "They are deeply worried about the direction our country is headed, and they want us to change course. They want us to bring our troops home from Iraq, make healthcare affordable and accessible, and change the way things work in Washington. They also want an end to the partisan bickering that is blocking progress at home and overseas. I believe that we can bring change to our government, but I know it will take hard work."

"If elected, I will fight to give our taxpayers the voice they deserve and put their interests first. I am honored to have the support of the people who have already joined the campaign whether financially or offering their time to volunteer. This early support of my campaign shows just how eager New Jersey families are for a new direction."
